My mom also made Grandma's recipe for our family, then I began making this same recipe for my family many, many years ago. Passed down from grandma, this chicken and dumpling recipe is made from scratch for ultimate comforting flavor.

- You need 1 of 3-6 lb whole chicken.
- Prepare 2 quart of water.
- Prepare 2 tsp of salt.
- It's 1 tsp of course black pepper.
- You need 2 cup of all-purpose flour.
- Prepare 1/2 tsp of baking powder.
- You need 1/2 tsp of salt.
- You need 3 tbsp of shortening.
- You need 3/4 cup of buttermilk.
Grandma's Chicken and Dumplings recipe: Surprisingly enough, the vinegar gives the dumplings a wonderful flavor. Rinse chicken and place in large soup pot with celery, carrot, onion, and bay leaves. Bring to a boil, then simmer covered until the chicken falls. My Grandma loved to cook homemade chicken and dumplings for many reasons.
Grandma's Chicken and Dumplings step by step
- Add water and 2 tsp salt to dutch oven and bring to a boil.
- Add whole chicken and boil at medium heat for one hour.
- Take chicken out of dutch oven to cool then debone (should be falling off the bone).
- Mix flour, baking soda, 1\2 tsp salt, shortening, and buttermilk. Knead 4 times.
- Roll out dough 1\4 inch thick and cut into squares (or pinch off pieces the size of quarters).
- Add dumplings one at a time to remaining boiling water one at a time and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Add deboned chicken and pepper and simmer for 15 more minutes....

I guess her main motivation was to satisfy the craving of her grandchildren. To this very day I can still remember Grandma hurrying around the kitchen, like she always did so frequently, taking all the necessary. I want to preserve Grandma's original recipes in her cookbook but I use shortcuts most of the time. You may want to use some of these shortcuts like using Bisquick for the dumplings.
